The (Sort Of) Good News About Obesity

Believe it or not, the growth rates of American obesity may be leveling off. That's according to a series of recent studies of various populations, and this fact was noted today by virtually every presenter.  But as one researcher put it today, taking joy at that leveling off is like taking joy on the fact that your town is only two thirds underwater and the rate of rising water is slowing.   Among some populations, the rate isn't slowing: among African American women, particularly girls, and among Hispanics, and among Native Americans, and among poorer Americans. So -- basically -- the upsurge in elite attention paid to obesity and some of the state-based policy interventions over the past few years seem to be effective crosspressure for whites, and for people with access to the material resources to pay attention to effective weight loss strategies.

The symptom of obesity will be replaced by something else unless and until we deal with our core problem as a nation, which is we do not know what health is.

Native Americans? You mean Red Indians? So the rest are not native, right? So they don't belong there. They belong somewhere else. Thank you. You have just clarified for me a most perplexing and fexing problem. America, therefore, as we know it, does not exist. Yipee!

I'm glad when you talk about obesity. It has been on my mind for a long time that the obese people in this world are in fact feeding off the thin people - feeding off people starving for lack of food. Eating them up, in fact. Cannibals. Do you really know what's in that can of meat you're eating? Do you know what your hamburger is? It's me, fat man. A human being. Eat up. There's plenty of us left. For now. When we run out you can start on yourself. What do you say? Or can we start on you now? Wouldn't that be fair?
