Succeeding Kennedy: Mitt Romney?

That's what Peter Roff of U.S. News & World Report suggests. Unless the succession law is changed to allow Gov. Deval Patrick (D) to appoint a replacement, Sen. Edward Kennedy's successor will be chosen via special election by early March. As odd as it sounds to have a Republican replace Kennedy, the consummate Democrat, in Massachusetts--and as much as Democrats would rally against the possibility--Roff thinks Romney would fare well:

As a self-funding candidate who has already been elected once statewide, Romney has nearly 100 percent name ID. And, in an environment where President Obama seems to be dragging the Democrats down, he would be a serious threat to the Democratic hegemony in Massachusetts's congressional delegation. Meaning Romney likely would win.
Lots of personal money...good name ID...a faltering Obama providing an opportunity to crack Democratic hegemony...sounds like a breakdown of Romney's chances to take the White House in 2012.

Didn't Romney sell his home in Mass, and his home in Utah?

Didn't Romney buy a home in California, keeping his home in N.H.

Of course, Mass had already been used up by Mitt, so why keep a home.

N.H. home is valuable for the presidential race and building a base, so that is a keeper

California? Now, that is a wonder, lets see Governor run? Help his friend from the Bain days Megan get elected, or build a base in Cal, for a presidential run?

Here is another thought for Mitt: Go into acting! Yes, with Mitts former sister in law, and strong Mitt Romney supporter Rhona Romney on his side. Rhona's brother in law, John Rakolta, along with another strong Mitt Romney supporter, bought into a new movie studio, along with long time family friend A.Alfred Taubman, who is another strong Mitt Romney supporter-- Mitt getting into the acting business should be a shoe in.

Or, may be we will be seeing films like "Mitt Romney takes on Red Dawn", after all taking out a group of high school kids should be a cinch!

I there is a special election, I propose sending Jimmy Carter as an observer to monitor its legitimacy. A reminder of Ted Kennedy's help for Carter in the 1980 presidential elections.

Excellent news, I hope Mitt Romney runs and wins handily.

Hahahahahahahaha.....first off, Romney slinked out of the governorship with a Bushesque approval rating in the 30s. Secondly, he wouldn't stand a chance unless he flip flopped back to his previous pro-choice, pro-civil union history. And, of course, that would doom him for the Republican presidential nomination. So, again, hahahahahahaha.

No, Romney has too much baggage left yet to be opened. His friends like David Fischer, his money bundler, and even Al Tubman have some questions to face.

Red Dawn? Yes, I think Mitt making a move shooting up a bunch of high school kids defending their country is more suitable from M. Romney.

Romney's approval in MA is in the toilet.

Him winning a MA Senate seat is purely Republican wishful thinking.

Even those who believed Romney could have beaten Kennedy back in 1994 have the good sense now to realize that joining the fray to replace the legendary Senator would -- win, lose or draw -- be tantamount to political suicide. If someone put the question to Romney, not doubt his answer: "Absolutely not!"

They're very likely to switch the law to let Patrick appoint someone--Dukakis is being tossed around.

Now I wouldn't count Romney completely out in an open run for the seat if he's even still a resident of the state....the only time to take a Senate seat here is when Kerry or Kennedy is no longer running. But he would indeed have to reflip all his values back to what they were when he was trying to get elected here, which may look a mite suspicious.

Romney's issue isn't needing more time in office; I don't see him being interested.

Rocky Rochester

Absolutely Not! Should be everyone' reply to Romney running for any office!

It wouldn't be a bad idea for Romney to go into acting. He's got the looks. And if Wikipedia is to be believed, Romney's mother, Lenore, gave up a contract with MGM to marry Mitt's father, George. So, the acting itch may be in his genes.

Me thinks you misuse the name "Deborah", Deborah.

Count Romney out, Yes acting his the career path for Romney to go! Think of the bright lights, camera and all the glam any Mitt could ever want.

America has enough crooked politicians, and does not need another one in Mitt.

---- signed Scott.

Romney doesn't live in Massachusetts anymore. How could he even be considered?

Romney has already said he is not interested in the long term seat. His focus is on helping other Republicans win, and I believe laying groundwork for a Presidential campaign sequel, should the atmosphere be right. (With Obama's economic/budgetary disaster well underway, it is almost certain to be.)

Added Senate responsibilities would be another chance for him to prove himself, but does he need to? Is the diversion of focus worth it? While reducing the Dem seats from 60 to 59 sounds worthwhile, what if his efforts using Free and Strong America PAC help whittle this down to 53 to 47 by the end of election 2010?

While I would like to see him accept an interim post, I doubt both that the Democrats will ask him to or that he would accept if offered.
