Palin's Honest But Unqualified, Americans Say

There's been some perturbation in Sarah Palin's orbit since the end of the presidential campaign. The new NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll finds a statistically significant drop in her favorability numbers since July; only 26% of Americans have a positive response to her versus 42% who regard her with suspicion. CNN's version of the same question lumps together the "mostlies" and pushes respondents to make an assessment. Palin's favorability rating rises to 42%; her unfavorability rating rises to 52%.

CNN's new numbers dig into her personal characteristics. A majority of Americans view Palin as honesty and trustworthy, two thirds believe she is a good role model for women, but more than 70% believe she is not qualified to be president.

Former AR Gov. Mike Huckabee's numbers are very solid. His favorables are at 42%, but he's viewed unfavorably by 26%, which means that he has room to build on his support. Not surprisingly, he's the plurality choice for the GOP nomination, garnering 36%.  In February, Palin took 29% in the same poll as compared to Huckabee's 26%.

These numbers reflect footprints based news coverage and popularity right now.   Assessments can and do change, rapidly. But unfavorable ratings are hard to dislodge. Since Palin's is based on her perceived lack of experience, one presumes that she would do well to gain experience if she wants to run for president.

Another liberal teeth gnawing fear of Palin article.

Palin? You mean the quitter? The moron who thinks Africa is a country? Please, do run her in 2012! Please!

24AheadDotCom (Replying to: kadzimiel)

Whether she actually thought that is unclear and it might be reasonable to doubt that story since it was coming from unnamed people inside the McCain campaign who were trying to cover up their own gross incompetence. Note, for instance, that the "palling around" bit was invented by the campaign and not Palin.

And, the poll is to a great extent an indication that the media's campaign to smear Sarah Palin worked. Her fans can strike back by holding those who spread those smears accountable as I do at the link.

Strangely enough, I forget who, but someone else commented that Palin's popularity stems largely from her ability to create a sense of revulsion, or at the least annoy the left. Note competency and experience are not required for that. So if you buy that, this poll seems to make a lot of sense.

Nobody ever went wrong underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Unqualified....you have got to be kidding me. How many of you voted for Obama, the majority of Americans say he is qualified !!! Strangely enough I see a lot of humor in this, he was but she is not ???. If I am correct Palin was the Governor of Alaska, I believe she has had some experience in Government, so now tell me... majority of America what did Obama have to make him so qualified.

knot2hazy (Replying to: MacMac)

I'll tell you what makes him qualified .. the predisposition to say "yes we can" to Goldman Sachs.

NickP (Replying to: knot2hazy)

Uh, that was Bush ...

And by the way, being a Senator for 4 years, a legislator for 7 years before that, and teaching Constitutional law for the 7 years before that is a *tad* more legitimate than being Governor for 2 years ... oh, and being a mayor before that, in a town that's so tiny that absolutely nothing is required of its mayor (just ask Wasilla's current one).

What's happening in this country that so much of its population can be so aggressively, proudly, ignorantly WRONG so consistently? I'm not an Obama apologist, but how about you guys criticize him for some of the things he's actually screwed up.

He was a community organizer 20 years ago, for a couple of summers and he was an excellent campaigner. What more do you need to be POTUS.

Please list her qualifications.
Education?
Experience?
Books read?

Obama-
Harvard.
Editor of Harvard Law Review.
Lawyer.
Constitutional Law lecturer.
Senator. Political experience.

Of course, for the hard-core right, all this makes Palin all the more desirable.

Can't trust all that learning.

yes we can and a brain..... so how are we doing America, are we getting better, do we have more jobs, how many jobs have been lost as of this year..... oh yes we can..... do better, but when does it start to get better ????

RomanX (Replying to: MacMac)

I'm sorry exactly how long did it take for the previous administration to dig the hole we as a country find ourselves in?

I mean 2 wars and the largest financial crisis since the Great Depression should be easy to fix in less then a year! Amirite?!?!?

Seriously we have been digging this whole for decades and you expect the election of one person to turn that around in less then a year. Some problems take time to fix. There are very few easy solutions and government, in general is slow to effect change, by design.

We all would all do well to remember that, some solutions to large problems take time to implement.

JoshinHB (Replying to: RomanX)

If Bush is responsible for what the country is experiencing now. Then by youre own logic Clinton is 100% Responsible for 911. It would be nice if "progressives" where man enough to admit that.

knot2hazy (Replying to: MacMac)

Just saying "Yes We Can" never got him anywhere except past McCain, the other coward owned by the treacherous, treasonous republican party ..

"Yes We Can" got him the "Gullible Democrat" vote, the Wall-Street-Criminal approval, and ringing endorsement from Federal Reserve Mafia.

One of the biggest strikes against Palin is that, after being touted for her experience as Governor, she couldn't handle finishing out a term running a state that is just a geographically large congressional district. Since then she has just stumbled along making speeches and statements that do not inspire confidence in her knowledge or preparation. Wanting someone as a neighbor doesn't equate to thinking they have the experience to run a nation. Saying she is experienced because she is thought to be more experienced than others doesn't work either. Under that logic she might be considered to be a rocket scientist because she might be smarter than most fifth graders.

You left out the Facebook updates.

MacMac-

I think it is way too early to judge Obama. He first has to overcome all the incredible damage done by the last administration before he can start to take the country forward.

I own my own business. I started it in 1986. In 2000 I had my best year ever. In 2008 I returned to levels the same as when I started. I took me fourteen years to get there and only eight to get back to the beginning. Obama had nothing to do with that. That all Mr. Bush's time.

24AheadDotCom

This site says that CNN is misleading about the poll. Now, who would expect them to do that? They're an Obama-approved media source, aren't they?

In this instance, the left is right about something: It would be a Democrats' dream come true if Sarah Palin managed to get on the 2012 GOP ticket. Even those who love her (not me) or who think she gets a raw deal from the media (me) have to concede that her liabilities far outweigh her advantages, now and for the foreseeable future.

I predict the book and the publicity around it will improve her favorability, and demonstrate that she's more intelligent than the media has acknowledged. But still. She quit as governor of Alaska. She was unprepared to talk about any issues except energy and the social issues. Her selection in 2008 destroyed her political future, or at least salted the fields for the next eight to 12 years at least.

The GOP is looking like it's going to be unable to capitalize on the opportunity Obama's weak performance as president will give them in 2012. They have nobody. And nobody hasn't much to say.

JoshinHB (Replying to: Vail Beach)

If you look at what people (the media) were saying about Reagan and the republican party in 78 and 79 it is amazingly similar to what is being said about Palin and the republican party now. Truth is, in 2012, after 2 more years of depression anyone will be able to beat O.

Vail Beach (Replying to: JoshinHB)

Just because the media was wrong about Reagan (underestimating his intellect and overlooking the fact that he'd been a successful governor of a large state), doesn't mean they're wrong about Palin. Reagan was already a consequential figure by the time he ran in '80, whether the media wanted to credit him or not. You can't make the same claims for Palin. She doesn't have 20 years of activism, thought leadership and executive responsibility to point to. No matter how much you like her, that's a stubborn fact.

I don't begrudge her resignation from Alaska's state house as a personal decision, or even as a decision that served her constituents well by removing a lightening rod. It wasn't irrational or disgraceful. But in doing so, she sacrificed any possible claim of readiness for the presidency in 2012 or probably 2016.

And I disagree that after 2 more years of depression... That's what the GOP thought in 1936. The problem now, as it was then, is that you can't beat somebody with nobody, nor bad policies with no policies.

Real Conservative

Do the RepubliCONs have anyone for potential "Fuhrer" who isn't a complete idiot. Its really sad but I suppose when you take your marching orders from Rush Limbaugh......

Amazing how poor Americans are at analyzing character. Sarah Palin is trustworthy? Sarah Palin is a role model? As a teacher of 25 years having interacted with over 4,000 students, I would say unequivocally that Ms. Palin is a self-centered, money-hungry, fame-seeking, dishonest, power-grabbing, liar whose mission is to become rich and powerful by creating an American theocracy of whacko, non-thinking fundamentalist Christians. I suppose I could go on....
