Mike Allen reports that David Axelrod sat down with Fox News chairman Roger Ailes in New York a few weeks ago. No word on what the two discussed.
Axelrod said he spoke recently to a "very significant figure" on the right who told him that Obama "wanted to start a national police force." "What are you talking about," Axelrod asked. The GOPer sent him a 21-second clip from a speech Obama made in Colorado last year -- a speech on national service -- and in it, Obama said he wanted to create a civillian force that could go into countries and provide humanitarian services.... Obama used the word "civil force" -- "They took that 21-second bite .... and it has been taken as an article of faith that the president wants to create a national police force."

SO he is against the war because its a waste of money and futile but wants to spend billions of dollars creating a national police for what reason and what does he hope to accomplish that the military already doesnt or cannot do? lol business consulting
Mr. Alexrod's response is MOST deceptive. Then candidate Obama said “a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as our military.
Mr. Axelrod's characterization of this is disingenuous at best and paints the Right as nut jobs, in my opinion.
To see the 21-second clip of now President Obama speaking in his own words got to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt2yGzHfy7s and see the truth.
It is not ambiguous or crackpot and shows a scary prospect in my opinion.
You're right tajemas.
It's not ambiguous or crackpot. It's just mind-boggingly stupid! Do you think Obama's that stupid to create something like that? He wants the Americorps to be funded like that. Yes, let's watch a 21-second clip out of context of a 40 minute speech. Bloody brilliant.
Next time you choose to be stupid, just go walk away.
Well please tell how the statement is incorrect and out of context. What was said was quit alarming. Please elucidate me with your wisdom and provide the missing context that makes this all innocent, oh great enlightener. LOL.
I await your real wisdom. I think I will be waiting a long time.
You have to ask how a 21 second snippet of a 25 minute speech is "out of context?" Seriously? The irony here is if you listened to the FIVE SECONDS preceding this famous quote you would know he's talking about increasing the size of the PEACE CORPS so that we can increase the effect of AMERICAN DIPLOMACY in the world as a means to increase NATIONAL SECURITY. Literally, Obama is calling for a Peace Corps that is as well funded and as large and as a strong as the military. He is calling for literally the POLAR OPPOSITE of what you are balling up your fists claiming he is calling for. I do realize that to know this you would have to actually listen to his words --and more than just the ones quoted by Michael Savage-- but I bet if you try you can do it.
In fact I DARE you to listen to the entire speech (here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df2p6867_pw) and then tell me that Obama is a fascist who wants to do anything of the sort you and your paranoid fantasies suggest.
The sad part is he is really calling for some awesome stuff and you and people like you allow yourselves to be poisoned by such ignorant trash that we have to discuss your fantasies instead of fixing the country.
I consider myself fair minded and I didn't need to be dared to check out your clip but I totally admit I was completely wrong. I stand corrected. Thanks for clarify this misconception for me.
You are free to believe or disbelieve me but it makes me much less hostile to President Obama.
See, rational discourse is more effective than name calling. ;)
For crying out loud. You want me to believe Roger Ailes is worried about a national police force? This little post is either sleazy or deranged. Is what afflicts Andy Sullivan catching?
We have a National Police Force...
...It is called the FBI.
...Prevaricating Idiots!

As an ignorant foreigner I thought the USA had a 'National Police force' --- the FBI? is a 'uniformed; branch different/effective or needed?
A civilian force as powerful as the military, how for what? if its for disaster relief etc fine to cordinate but what is usually needed are military assets such as helicopters, M.A.S.H's etc

If George Bush had said such a thing (I am no fan of Mr. Bush) you would NOTbe interpreting things the same way. How many of you think George Bush was behind the Twin-Towers coming down and that a cruise missile hit the Pentagon? Not all but definitely some.
I do not believe that an interpretation of this as being sinister is necessarily inaccurate. This President is a bigger liar than Bush (that is not easy) and is narcissistic in my opinion.
His grabbing of power has been extraordinary and it is possible he isn't the good man you think but a True Believer willing to do anything to achieve his objectives.
I don't expect you to agree. Even more I know you won't take pause and consider other possibilities.
Yeah, Americorps should be larger than the US Military. Who are the idiots? I would expect your answer would differ from mine.
How exactly has Obama "grabbed power"? By being a elected by a larger popular majority than Bush ever was? Just say you don't like him. But don't say all this other garbage. Every politician by nature is a narcissist. Every last one. That isn't news. Americorps will never and could never be as big as the US military. You know that but you just don't like Obama and feel the need to conflate all these other accusations to make your dislike look legitimate. You may have legitimate complaints but you haven't listed one yet.
There are many examples of Obama stretching the power of the Executive Branch of government associated with the bailout of Wall Street and GM. Just look of the negation of stockholders' rights/claims in the GM bankruptcy proceedings as an example. I was not arguing that he wants Americorps larger than the US Military but that he was talking about a new national security force as large. That is what is stated in the youtube clip. It conjures up images of the SS.
You as a presumed fan of the President, see things as innocent. I find them potentially alarming.
As a former Left Winger of 50 years of age, I know how some (or most) Far Left Progressives think (or so I believe). This president is a Far Left radical and community organizer and an extremely polarizing figure.
Yes, I am honest about my dislike and I have many reasons. That is not what this is about, it is about his remarks in the Youtube video and what they mean. This article just brushed away his remarks without explaining them or showing them. It left the impression that there was not a basis for people that are worried about what is said in the clip. That is, it minimizes and implies that any opposition is partisan and not driven by a valid concern but paranoia or Easter Bunnies.
You may share that view but I feel his remarks directly lead to this situation.
If George Bush had said as much there would be no room for any other interpretation. What he said sounds to me as very ominous. I look at this person as potentially dangerous. I am not saying he is dangerous, I am saying I see him as potentially dangerous and remarks like this re-enforce that mindset.
One must be on constant vigilance for tyrants as Liberals were during the Bush Administration.
Im not saying my cat is dangerous, I am saying I see him as potentially dangerous and when I see him play with yarn this enforces that mindset.

As a left-winger: bunk. He hasn't investigated torture, he hasn't put any actual pressure on Israel to stop settlement construction, he's no better on civil liberties than Bush was, he's given loads of money to the banks, he's trying to put US military forces in Colombia... Obama's no leftist.
The quote is a reference to an international civilian organization, not a national police force.
If you are conjuring up images of the SS yourself, you are lazy. Nazi references are for lazy minds and lazy, losing arguments. None of what you say is true or legitimate. Your opposition is driven by paranoia if you think there would ever be an SS formed in the US. Bush wasn't a tyrant, just a dolt.
Im not saying my cat is dangerous, I am saying I see him as potentially dangerous and when he plays with his yarn this reinforces that mindset.
Tajemis, how is abrogating contracts of failing firms more sinister than wiretapping American phones or employing CIA "blacksites". For me, this is the fundamental question and why I see Republican fears of Obama taking over as fear mongering and frankly, whining.
It is not. But I also considered W to be potentially dangerous constitutionally.
I hope your kitty is not dangerous. ;)
Anyway, I have been convinced that I am in error and completely wrong.
Seriously.
My sincere apologies to all and my thanks for those that tried to address my concerns and in fact did so, most specifically "backum".
Thank you to you, Tajemis, for being open enough to challenge your own beliefs and adult enough to admit when you are wrong.
Now, if you would talk to the other X million who are screaming about Obama being a fascist and a brownshirt and whatnot it would be an apt penance. Or, if you could just make Hannity, Savage, O'Reilley, Limbaugh, and etc stop spreading the lies in the first place that would serve, too.
:)

Bakum, I will to a degree. I find this outrageous that this piece of disinformation was allowed to be passed along unchallenged for so long.
I find it extremely manipulative to leave these lies floating in the ether unchallenged and it has left me wondering what other distortions or outright lies are allowed to be unchallenged on The Right.
A real eye opener for me.
Thank you again.
You can tell a lot about a man by what he says in 21 seconds. Watch out.
