What's Glenn Beck Up To? Something Big, He Says

Hey -- we like conspiracies too! Here's one, with some fact attached to it: conservative media icon Glenn Beck is planning something big -- very big -- for 2010. On his radio show yesterday, Beck alluded to a major nationwide mobilization project of some kind that he and some colleagues will soon announce. "If you think the 9/12 project was something...you ain't seen nothing yet," he said (roughly -- I didn't have a pen handy when he uttered this).

Beck's 9/12 project brought tens of thousands of his ideological compatriots to rallies in D.C., and thousands more at rallies across the country. The event, he insisted, was "non-political" -- about sending a message to leaders that the feeling of American solidarity the day after 9/11/01 was worth fighting for. But Beck, at the time, also announced a follow-on project, "2010: In Or Out," asking people to determine whether their elected representatives support a five-part pledge. That was the first step, he implied, of several to come.

Beck appears to be building something. His television show audience is growing, despite a well-publicized boycott, and his radio show calls itself the third highest in the country. (Radio audience measurements can be fickle.) His newsletter has more than 750,000 subscribers. He's authored three best-selling books. As the attention to Beck has increased -- as Beck has become persona non grata among elites -- who, let's face it, also love to cover him as a phenomenon they can't quite understand -- Beck seems to enhanced his standing with his target audience.

Given that 2010 is an election year, it would be logical to assume that Beck is putting together a mass voter registration and mobilization project. It's a tricky proposition. For one thing, conservative talk radio audiences -- and Fox News viewers -- tend to be registered voters and tend to have a pretty good sense of which party they'll support. Growing the voter rolls has been a growth industry for Democrats, whose demographic base tends to be relatively unregistered as compared to the Republican Party's. And Beck's relationship with the official organs of the Republican Party is, to the say the least, strained. He doesn't care for the national party, and they keep him at arm's length.

And, of course, Beck claims to be non-partisan. Conservative, yes, but disdainful of the GOP, with no vested interest in seeing Republicans return to power, either. The reality is that, given how burnt-in the two party system is, ginning up enthusiasm among conservatives is going to hurt Democrats and help Republicans...but maybe Beck will try something more subtle. He'll have to draw the line carefully between exhortations to hold politicians accountable and support for particular candidates. There can't be an official "Beck" slate of independent candidates out there. And despite Beck's plea for Democrats to join him in protest, he's become sufficiently polarizing so as to significantly increase the social costs of association for anyone with non-conservative sympathies.

Still, if Beck becomes part of the apparatus that fuses into one movement irritated Republicans and angry conservatives and fickle Ron Paul libertarians -- he's going to become a major electoral player in 2010.

Your lips to God's ears, Marc. I would love to have Glenn Beck play a more prominent role in our political public discourse. A sign of the coming Wingularity?

Beck is standing when no one else will......or can....

Ditto ... head.

Hah, signing the Glenn Beck loyalty pledge will be a precondition for winning a tough 2010 GOP primary. Love it.

This time he's going to encourage people to send *two* tea bags.

But, seriously, I don't think Beck is smart enough and committed enough to cleaning up DC to promote this plan. If he encouraged his followers to form into local groups and then choose the smartest among them to ask the questions, things could change dramatically. I don't think he really wants to change things dramatically, he just wants to be dramatic.

Another Option (Replying to: 24AheadDotCom)

Ok, you either watch him because you 'think' he's dramatic and just watch for the entertainment factor or you listen to the facts he lays out backed by his witty analogies... but you surely don't seek out mundane presenters of current events...

Glenn Beck is dramatic - but this does not diminish the powerful message he is delivering that resonates with millions of people who have, finally, someone with some stones enough to call a shot based in common sense...

on the other hand, you could be someone who never watches but get's enough '2nd hand beck' from news clips etc that you are painting him with a typical broad brush...

either way, you certainly can't discount his message as anything other than authentic, powerful, perfectly timed and has the power to move people to stand up for their beliefs... Finaly, someone saying what I'm thinking and someone who does enough research to back it all up -

Glenn, is that you?

But, seriously, it might be a good idea to actually try to understand my position on Glenn Beck. There's about a dozen of my posts about him or involving him at that link. Click each one of those links for the full post, and especially see the one about points.

The reality is that, given how burnt-in the two party system is, ginning up enthusiasm among conservatives is going to hurt Democrats and help Republicans...but maybe Beck will try something more subtle.

Beck? Subtle? Glenn Beck???

Two words: Marriage Equality.

I hope Beck drops over

I'm sensing the revival of the Whigs.

Beck's ratings are going up because some of us are watching for the laughs. He is paranoid, insane, ridiculous, and frankly more fun to watch than Rev. Gene Scott. He just makes less sense.

Ambers....the GOP continues to be a riderless horse.
Until it can post a viable candidate.....that is non-WEC and non-mormon, no traction.
WEC=white evangelical christian.

CadillacColinCody (Replying to: strangelet)

Given the fact that a very large number of Americans are "white, evangelical Christians," were we to eliminate all of them from contention for the Republican nomination for president, we would also be seeding the election to the Democrats from the get-go. I believe the only candidate who can defeat Obama is a highly intelligent, superbly prepared white evangelical political conservative who looks presidential and is a great speaker (exactly like the late, great Tony Snow). Since Obama clearly has the enormous power of Lucifer on his side, we have to have the even greater power of God on ours to be able to win. Leave God out of it now and we loose ignominiously.

Glenn Beck does thorough research - it was because of him that Van Jones had to resign. If we actually had REAL reporters in this country doing their job, we wouldn't be seeing people like Glenn Beck stepping in to fill the void. But if the reporters had been doing their job during the election, Obama would not be President. Glenn Beck is giving us the facts then he is using those facts to draw conclusions - THAT IS CALLED THINKING! Thank God for Glenn Beck.

Ha ha ha! ROFLOL! That is too funny! Glen Beck doesn't check facts and he admits that, although not on his own show. He gets paid to talk shit and gets rich because lot of dumb-asses believe anything he says. Like if he writes in on his chalkboard that makes it true and credible! Every time I see his show, which I can only take in small doses, kind of like Jerry Springer, I check the facts on what he says, just for fun. So far I've always found there are big parts left out of the stories, big embellishments added, out of context quotes and just out and out lies, along with his opinions presented as facts. Add to that the stupid looking faces he makes and it's just hilarious! I especially love it when he cries! Ooh! Glen Beck knows all the scary truth about everything! Ooh! Things no one else knows about! Politics, history, constitutional law, science, economics... is there anything he's not the expert on?
Would you like to buy some gold? Or maybe a book? ha ha ha ha!

Musselhead (Replying to: Kay E)

Oh Kay, it really is sad when people like you make such huge idiots of themselves. Didn't anyone tell you that checking the facts against factcheck.org doesn't count? Yeah, checking facts would actually be CHECKING THE FACTS by doing your own research. In which case, you'd be hard pressed to find anything even mildly untrue coming out of Glenn Beck. I do understand that the truths he is telling are for some, too scary to believe, and so it's possible that all this idiocy coming from you is simply a defense mechanism. In that case, we understand. So, check your facts again and come back. We'd love to discuss them with you. You know, the actual facts. You can even pick the subject!

Kay E (Replying to: Musselhead)

Did I mention factcheck.org? Where did you get that? Typical Glen Beck fan, jumping to conclusions and shouting opinions. Actually, I do my own research and find real facts. You should try it sometime. It's really easy and pretty fun, although not as much fun as laughing at Glen and his buds.
Oh my God!! Look out! The sky is falling!
Ya'll crack me up!

I agree with txmom3, Thank God for Glenn Beck and Fox News For telling the real truth, Our congress and the mainstream media have already been taken over by the corrupt Movement taking place in the White house.

The first time I heard Glenn Beck, there was something about him that I really liked; it was his down-to-earth approach to the issues facing our country and the fact that he doesn't go off half cocked about the issues; he does his research. He knows what he is talking about when he reports his findings. He is a man who has more courage in his pinky finger than the half-baked politicians who play follow the leader and the reporters and journalists from all the other news stations and newspapers combined that don't have the guts to go after the truth. He is a real God-fearing, country-loving Patriot. How many of those reporters and journalists, if they were reporting, what Glenn Beck does, would plead with the powers that be to prove him wrong. He is passionate about what he does and what he loves. He is willing to put himself out there and doesn't care what the radicals on either side say about him, because he knows he is reporting the truth.
That is what we don't see coming from this administration, so I'm glad we have someone like Glenn Beck who gets to the truth and brings it to the front. Thank God for Glenn Beck and Fox News.

What Glenn Beck does is the same thing Limbaugh and Hannity do. They convince working people that Obama wants to take away their prosperity when what Obama really wants to do is tax people in the financial class of Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. They have gotten rich convincing regular people to work against their own interests. They manipulate middle class people to go to war for the rich by convincing the middle class that they are so very special. I believe the term is "American exceptionalism." Add in an unhealthy dose of fear - because frightened people are less likely to think and more likely to react defensively, and feed in a little bit of anxiety about the black guy (translation: radical) now in the White House. It is ingenious, and inherently evil. It must be awful to be constantly fed a diet of fear and anxiety about the future, and to be made to believe that everything you value is under attack. Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity are laughing at you all the way to the bank.

Glenn is our modern day Thomas Paine. Think about it. Paine risked his own life to print the Common Sense pamphlets and Glenn does the same in telling America the truth. I am praying for your safety and the safety of your family Glenn. Keep up the good work. America needs you.

Maine Patriot

Glenn is our modern day Thomas Payne. I know he is too humble to believe that, but he is. Thomas Payne risked his life in printing the Common Sense pamphlets. So does Glenn Beck in getting the truth to the American people. I thank God for him every day and I pray for health and safety for him and his family. Obama and his crew are mobsters, the typical Chicago politicians - corrupt and underhanded. They better not think of harming a hair on Glenn's head because the wrath of the nation would be upon them.
Thank you Glenn for helping to save America.

I don't know what Beck is up to, but if Ambinder keeps putting Beck and Limbaugh at the top, this site may start getting some hits.

I'm curious to see how many people have actually contacted their congressman for the "In or Out 2010 program"? I've decided to take a part & track how effective the campaign has been. If you've contacted them, please let us know about it here: http://www.INorOUT.us

Beck is building a head of steam alright with 3 best sellers in a row, a radio show and a TV show with millions of listeners and viewers, that's big stuff. There's another huge tidal wave of book sales heading our way in Going Rogue, you could actually call it a Title Wave of common sense conservativism.

Glenn Beck has guts !! He stands up for what is right when the rest of us are too scared to speak up !! He and his followers just want the "real" America back ! The America of our Founding Fathers , and that scares some people because they don't understand the concept of true freedom ! We need to get back to our roots and re-educate ourselves on real American history , not this watered down "social studies" they're teaching in schools today , but the real HIStory , that's what made this country the greatest!!! That's all Glenn Beck and others want , it's not a Dem or a GOP idea , it's an American idea !!

This is a real movement and all that but the one that will once and for all get it going good is Nat Hunt. He is a writer based out of New Jersey who foresaw the recession and has since then been in telepathic communication with Glenn Beck (the ghost of Thomas Paine), Pee Wee Herman, and Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Someone mentioned something about God in their comment above. I think in regards to running a "Godly" (Christian?) candidate yer barking up the wrong apple cherry tree if that's you sir ma'am.

Nat Hunt has to get an hour's meeting with Mr. Obama (in private) so that he can convince the POTUS to become a Republican. That will solve all the nation's problems and unleash all its potentials.

Nat Hunt is an amazing persuader, the likes of which have never been seen on this earth before.

INorOUT.us (Replying to: Pascal)

You can't convince someone like this of anything. Their beliefs have deep roots, it would be like trying to convince Glenn Beck that God doesn't exist...it's not going to happen.

What Obama & his administration are doing, is on purpose, they have an ulitimate goal of Fundamentally transforming America, and they will stop at nothing. Only 'We the People' can defend the Constitution as it stands!

Glenn stands up because the cowards in D.C. cant. They make me sick, as do most who still walk through life blinded. God keep our constituition

I do not know enough about Glenn Beck to know whether he stands for me (since I am a gay man who hopes to someday marry my boyfriend of seven years).

But I do know enough about Glenn Beck to know that he stands for America. And that is good enough for me.
