Inhofe On Obama's Trip To Copenhagen

Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) is America's leading climate skeptic, which would place him high in the running for leading climate skeptic worldwide, and he plans to attend the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December with a climate "truth squad" to present the global-warming-is-a-farce side of things. Here's what he said, in an official statement, of President Obama's decision to travel to Copenhagen himself and address the conference:

"I suspect President Obama is making the trip to Copenhagen in order to 'save' the climate conference," Sen. Inhofe said. "Yet no amount of lofty rhetoric or promises of future commitments can save it. This is due in large part to the fact cap-and-trade legislation in the Senate is dying on the vine, and, as important, recent revelations of leading climate scientists who appear to have manufactured the climate 'consensus'-revelations that cast doubt over the entire global warming enterprise.

"Moreover, it's clear that China, India, and the developing world, which will soon be responsible for the vast bulk of greenhouse gas emissions, will not accept mandatory cuts in emissions-despite entreaties from President Obama. The U.S. Senate has made clear on numerous occasions that unilateral action by the United States is unacceptable, because it will harm our economy and have virtually no effect on climate change."
In related news, Inhofe has also announced he's launching a "Climategate" investigation into whether scientists manipulated data to manufacture consensus on global warming.

One thing not up for debate is that James Inhofe is an idiot. The second paragraph of Inhofe's statement illuminates this perfectly. China and the developing world are refusing to accept mandatory caps because the US (the biggest emmitter) is refusing to accept mandatory caps. Action by the US would not be unilateral if we were willing to take action. How does Inhofe spew this nonsense with a straight face?

How does the IPCC spew its nonsense with a straight face, especially considering the manipulation of the data by CRU?

CRU did not manipulate any data. You should really read those leaked emails before talking out of your ass.

A.K.

I am an engineer with 20 years experience. I've worked in research labs, I've studied physics, chemistry, electronics, environment, climate change.

You are the one whose talking out of his ass. Why are you are defending these crooks?

You ought to be ashamed at yourself. This is a scandal and all you can do is tell lies. The emails and the code show ample evidence of data manipulation by multiple people at CRU.

Why don't you look at HARRY_READ_ME.txt for a start before you write such rubbish.

Or are you too stupid to read?

A.K. YOU are the denier now. YOU MAKE ME SICK!

Moogie24 (Replying to: Al K.)

Replying to dharper below... harry_read_me.txt doesn't come up with anything but "page not found." I have read quite a bit on climate change, and I'm having a difficult time how anyone could-- and why they would disbelieve the climate change deniers.. unless you are a legislator who is being bankrolled by the coal and oil industries... or someone who doesn't like change....Dharper.. can you send me to another website that has some legitimate reasons to deny that climate change is happening and that it is caused by humans' beahvior??

Inhofe is not an idiot. He is an American hero. He has fought to prevent job killing cap and trade legislation. And, with Climategate, he has been proven right. He now has all the data he needs to claim the moral high ground. It starts with the emails. But, the computer models are more damaging. Cap and Trade will never pass the Senate, despite what Obama claims. People who have been fighting so hard for CO2 reductions need to understand they have been manipulated and are on the wrong side.

Really Cheesie? I think you are really wishing upon a star on what you want to happen. How are the computer models so damaging? CRU was just one model.

CRU was the only data collection entity for monitoring and compiling global temperatures for the past 25 years and by which the IPCC made its now-discredited assessments. Alas, poor ol' Jiminy Cricket has now lost his innocence...

Inhofe is an oil company shill - AND an idiot. Follow the money. So called climategate is a manufactured scandal - nothing there... Teabag anyone?
Global warming is real and getting worse all the time.

Greene Ghost (Replying to: Sir Ken G)

How did CRU manufacturer its own lies? You should be learning how to read tealeaves.

The ice caps still aren't melting, right? Jim Inhofe is possibly the dumbest guy in Congress - and that's really saying something.

TO THE 4 PEOPLE WHO POSTED BEFORE ME AND FOR EVERYONE ELSE WHO SEES THIS PAGE: DOWNLOAD THE LEAKED E-MAILS AND DOCUMENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA HERE:

AND HERE:

THESE WERE ORIGINALLY POSTED ON WIKILEAKS DUE TO THE FACT THAT WHISTLEBLOWERS ALL OVER THE WORLD CAN SUBMIT TO THE WEBSITE AND ALL THE INFORMATION WILL STAY PROTECTED!

AFTER YOU DO THE RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF, YOU WILL LEARN THAT ANYONE WHO DISAGREES OBVIOUSLY DOES NOT HAVE THE FACTS, IS SO ELUDED BY THE FRAUD THAT THEY THEMSELVES ARE IN DENIAL, OR IS SIMPLY PART OF THE STRUCTURE THAT IS ON CLEAN-UP DUTY TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S MINDS THAT ARE TOO LAZY TO DO THE RESEARCH!!!

The leaked information is relevant to a single study that became controversial for drawing conclusions that the reported data were insufficient to support. IMO the paper is problematic; however, it is just false logic to extrapolate from this single incident that a significant portion of climate change science is sloppy or fraudulent.

Commentary on the leaked stuff above:

Greene Ghost (Replying to: pts)

The FACT remains that the the temperature data collected and manipulated SOLELY by CRU and used IN ITS ENTIRETY by IPCC has now been fully discredited and no amount of spin to the contrary can change that.

Sir Ken G (Replying to: Greene Ghost)

The FACT is that this is a phony story cooked up by deniers who illegally hacked a computer. Read the Wiki link down below....

Did anyone else catch Fresh air's interview with that guy writing about the "family?" I had already been aware of the fact that Inhofe is on the wrong side of pretty much every issue, but it also seem like he's a part of a secret cult.

Here's the Wikipedia discussion of the controversial paper:

As a scientist, I find it very important (though difficult) to separate politics and science. This whole Climategate fiasco has made this task increasingly difficult.

Before these emails, I thought anthropomorphic global warming (AGW) was a done deal. I thought this because an overwhelming body of PEER REVIEWED SCIENCE SUPPORTED AGW, and was even summed up nicely in the report from the IPCC.

Then these emails were released and prompted scientists to take a second look at the science. Here is what we find:

1. Secrecy.

The CRU, which housed much of the data and many of the models used in the IPCC report, rejected any request by scientists outside their organization to see the raw data. This is illegal, as there is a Freedom of Information Act in the UK, but these "scientists" claimed that because their work was commissioned the UN, they did not have to abide by the FOIA. As a scientist, this a huge RED FLAG!

This is illegal, unscientific and it reeks off conflicts of interest and corruption. It is also important to delineate that these emails have nothing to do with the truth of this matter, they were merely the catalyst that allowed this ongoing policy of secrecy to precipitate in the media.

2. Cronyism.

The CRU emails, if even partially authentic, certainly suggest a great deal of bullying by these scientists against colleagues who were publicly skeptical and journals which published their papers. This is also highly unscientific. Whenever fellow scientist question your work, it should prompt you to do more and better science to demonstrate the strength of your hypothesis, not get together with your friends and use your reputations as leverage to bully them out of the "scientific" discussion.

3. Manipulation of data.

This last finding is the one that is most dependent on the accuracy of the hacked material, and since the accuracy will be difficult to verify (since the raw data has never been released), we must remember to not make it the foundation of our skepticism. The emails referred to using different tricks on the data. As a scientist who has done many statistical analyses on complex datasets, I can verify that these statistical analyses can be "tricky", but are necessary tools that find unseen trends in the data. But it is also very easy to manipulate the statistical analysis to make the results dance to your tune. Scientists hold each other accountable by sharing their raw data and allowing their colleagues to independently analyze their methods and conclusions.

It is important to note that the process of independent verification is NOT the same as the peer review process. A peer review process ensures that papers are generally methodologically sound and properly reported. Still many papers get through the peer review process that have poor methodologies or incorrect analyses, but those papers are then refuted in letters to the editor and with subsequent studies. This is why studies done independently are needed to verify the results of the study.

Thus, if there is a refusal to allow access to the data and the use of cronyism to prevent dissenting opinions from being published, the science stops becoming science.

4. Destruction of data.

In one of the hacked emails, Phil Jones tells his colleagues to delete some information and correspondence. Let's again remember these are hacked emails and we are not sure about the context of these emails or to what they may be referring. But it they are indeed deleting data and or official correspondence, this is illegal, unscientific and unethical.

This whole debacle has been extremely troubling. I had assumed that the proper scientific process had taken place and that the science of AGW had triumphed. But now that the Climategate scandal has brought to the surface the truth of the CRU's denial of independent verification, probable bullying of the scientific community, and possible manipulation and destruction of data.

These findings DEMAND a thorough, independent investigation and explanation.
