The GOP Purity Resolution

Remember when conservative members of the Republican National Committee tried to pass a party resolution labeling Democrats the "Democrat Socialist Party" and RNC Chairman Michael Steele succeeded in toning down the language to merely state that the Democratic Party is "dedicated to restructuring American society along socialist ideals"?

Well, it's back--sort of. Jim Bopp, the same committeeman who pushed that resolution, is now pushing another--one that calls for "Republican solidarity in opposition to Obama's socialist agenda" and, perhaps more significantly, would prevent RNC money and endorsements from going to candidates who disagree with more than two of 10 tenets of the GOP's platform, prescribed by Bopp for the 2010 election cycle. Hotline OnCall's Reid Wilson reports on the resolution here.

UPDATE: When asked if Steele will oppose the measure or work to soften it, the RNC sent this response from spokeswoman Gail Gitcho: "The deadline for submitting Resolutions for the RNC Winter Meeting is more than 30 days away.  At this point, we do not know what resolutions will be submitted nor what the final language of any resolution ultimately submitted may be."

The only people we hate worse than the Romans are the Judean People's Front! Splitters!

Isn't this official proof that the GOP has given up on moderates, candidates and voters? It looks like they learned the wrong lesson from November 3.

Why shouldn't the GOP be the party Purity, if it chooses?

It's like the Catholic church's message to Patrick Kennedy: You can believe whatever you want, but if you don't believe in our core values, you can't call yourself Catholic.

You can believe in all sorts of big-tent ideas, but don't go around calling yourself a Republican. Call yourself a moderate or something!

What you won't hear from others - especially the MSM - is that the immigration provision is deceptive, and I'm pretty sure that was intentional.

It should be noted that Reagan would fail this purity test being himself: a big fan of deficits (and also a tax-hiker, albeit after some pretty severe tax cuts), a supporter of amnesty for illegal aliens and a supporter of gun control (signed a law as Governor and supported Brady bill).

1. One person made the proposal.
2. It hasn't been voted on by the G)P.

It is great to talk about this, but don't immediately assume that it is where the GOP is headed. There certainly is an active conservative wing just as the Democrat Party has a very active liberal wing to the left.
