One day after National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman John Cornyn promised that his group wouldn't play spend money in the Republican primaries, a Republican Senate candidate in Arkansas has gotten some attention for an upcoming fundraiser of his at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters in Washington. Candidate Gilbert Baker has six Republican primary opponents, including the head of the Arkansas Tea Party movement.
The AP says that Cornyn is listed as a host of the 11/19 fundraiser, along with three other GOP heavyweights, including the top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell.
An NRSC spokesperson told the AP that the fundraiser does not imply that Cornyn is endorsing Mr.Baker. Other candidates, the spokesperson said, could also have their fundraisers at the NRSC.
"Helping to raise money for a candidate is far different than saying that the Committee is going to spend money attacking another Republican in a primary," Walsh said. "If Senator Cornyn, Senator DeMint or any other Senator chooses to personally help raise money for a particular Republican candidate that's their prerogative. That's far different however from the NRSC as an institution making the decision to spend money against a Republican candidate in a primary."
Walsh, reading Trevino's comments in an earlier draft of this post, e-mailed this response: "The NRSC's policy has always been that we list events that we are asked to list by the campaigns, but due to the number of races, we do not seek them out from each individual campaign. So Mr. Trevino's criticism is remarkable considering that up until just a few hours ago, the DeVore campaign had never before asked the NRSC to list its fundraisers. Now that they have made that request, we are happy to oblige. I will say however, that it remains a puzzling strategy by Mr. Trevino to routinely attack and publicly distort the positions of the very campaign committee whose support and resources his client would presumably need if Mr. DeVore were to be the nominee."
